The Legend of Crane and Turtle
A famous Japanese fable tells a poignant story of how the Turtle and the Crane came to rescue one another and illustrates the value of friendship and co-operation.
In the distant past, there was a great flood that came on suddenly and without a warning. The poor Crane could not find any dry place to land anywhere, no matter how hard he tried. The water covered the land and the Crane had no place to rest. The Crane needed to rest his wings because he stayed in the air for such a long time. He was about to die from exhaustion when he came upon a Turtle. The Turtle arose out of the floodwaters and upon seeing the exhausted bird, offered its back to the bird to rest upon. Thus, in offering a shelter in the time of need, the Turtle kept the Crane alive long enough for floodwaters to recede.
Years later, there was a terrible drought that descended upon the land. The poor Turtle was suffering without much needed water. Upon seeing that the Turtle needed help, Crane lifted him up and carried him a long long distance to a thriving lake.
Wildly different species, the Crane and Turtle came together in their time of need and became mutually supportive. They enjoyed a long life as friends.
This ancient fable is told and retold time and again to illustrate the value of helping each other and caring for one another in the time of need.
